It also keeps a small vault. Everything in it is encrypted in your browser with a key derived from your master passphrase, so the saved list can only be opened with that passphrase.
What it does
Cryptographic randomness
Values come from the browser's cryptographic random source rather than a predictable number generator.
Passwords or passphrases
Generate something short and dense, or a sequence of words that is easier to type and remember.
Strength you can read
An entropy readout shows why one option is stronger than another as you move the length and character toggles.
An encrypted vault
Saved entries are encrypted with AES-GCM using a key derived from your passphrase with PBKDF2. The passphrase never leaves the page, which also means nobody can reset it for you.
How to use Password Generator
- Pick a length and the character sets you want, or switch to passphrase mode.
- Copy the password, or read the entropy meter to decide whether it should be longer.
- To keep it, set a master passphrase and save the entry to the vault.
Questions about Password Generator
Is the vault a real password manager?
No. It is a convenience for a handful of passphrases, encrypted in your browser. Use a dedicated password manager for anything you cannot afford to lose.
What happens if I forget the master passphrase?
The vault cannot be opened. The encryption key is derived from the passphrase and nothing stores it, so there is no reset and no recovery.
Do the passwords ever leave my browser?
The generator runs entirely on the page, and anything you save is encrypted before it is written to this browser's local storage.
How long should a password be?
Longer matters more than complicated. A sixteen-character random password, or a five-word passphrase, is a sensible default.
